An exhibition of Kanta (Indian textile art) and workshop by Mari Mochizuki
●6-24 October 2006
Nakshi Kantha (quilt embroidery) is a folk art of Bangladesh and West Bengal, India that has been passed down through generations. The way of reforming old sari and men’s shirts has developed to be a fine art form over the centuries. Mari Mochizuki encountered Kantah at Calcutta National Museum in 1978, which made a deep impression on her. She has devoted herself to learning and conservation of the art ever since and returned to India ten times. In January 2007 she was invited to visit Bangladesh to teach the art of Kantha which was a tradition in decline.
